Effects of fasting and pyruvate on palmitic acid metabolism.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Neither fasting nor pyruvate supplementation affects the oxidation of octanoic acid by liver slices (l-3). Similarly, neither fasting nor glucose supplementation affects the oxidation of this acid by the intact rat (4). On the other hand, the oxidation in vivo of palmitic acid and tripalmitin is increased by prior fasting of the animal and decreased by prior glucose administration (4). The differences between the long and short chain acids in viva suggested that such a difference may also exist in vitro. The present paper deals with the results of studies in which the oxidation of palmitic acid by liver and kidney slices was studied from the following standpoints: (a) the influence of fasting, (b) the influence of pyruvate, and (c) the influence of fasting on the effect of pyruvate.

Effects of Ramadan fasting on plasma free fatty acids in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global disease which its prevalence is about 10-35%. Several factors are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of fasting during Ramadan on plasma free fatty acids in patients with NAFLD.Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed during the month of Ramadan in June-Ju...
متن کاملAntioxidant effect of mogrosides against oxidative stress induced by palmitic acid in mouse insulinoma NIT-1 cells
Excessive oxidative stress in pancreatic β cells, caused by glucose and fatty acids, is associated with the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Mogrosides have shown antioxidant and antidiabetic activities in animal models of diabetes, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study evaluated the antioxidant effect of mogrosides on insulinoma cells under oxidative stress caused by palmiti...
متن کاملEffect of pyruvate on octanoate metabolism as influenced by potassium and lithium.
Pyruvate has been shown to decrease the oxidation of palmitic acid by rat liver and kidney slices (l), but to have little influence on octanoate oxidation by liver slices (2, 3). Likewise, prior glucose administration decreased the rate of oxidation of palmitic acid by the rat in viva, but not that of octanoic acid (4). Glucose has also been reported to decrease the oxidation of serum lipides b...
متن کاملComplexity of glutamine metabolism in kidney tubules from fed and fasted rats.
Glutamine is an important renal glucose precursor and energy provider. In order to advance our understanding of the underlying metabolic processes, we studied the metabolism of variously labelled [13C]glutamine and [14C]glutamine molecules and the effects of fasting in isolated rat renal proximal tubules. Absolute fluxes through the enzymes involved, including enzymes of four different cycles o...
متن کاملMisconceptions and negative attitudes towards the metabolic effects of Ramadan fasting, resulting in fasting avoidance
The aim of this study was to assess public knowledge about the effects of Ramadan fasting on various aspects of health and its association with fasting decision-making. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 600 subjects. The association between fasting and participants’ knowledge and attitudes toward Ramadan fasting, anthropometric measurements, physical activity, depression, anxiety, str...
